El virus Nipah (NiV) es un patógeno zoonótico (se transmite de animales a humanos) extremadamente grave debido a su alta tasa de letalidad, que oscila entre el 40% y el 75%. Dicha enfermedad comienza con fiebre, dolor de cabeza y síntomas respiratorios similares a una gripe. En casos graves, progresa rápidamente a encefalitis aguda (inflamación del cerebro), convulsiones y coma en un plazo de 24 a 48 horas. Aproximadamente el 20% de los supervivientes sufre secuelas neurológicas permanentes, como cambios de personalidad o trastornos convulsivos.

Actualmente no existen vacunas ni tratamientos específicos aprobados. A principios de febrero se localizó un brote de esta enfermedad en India, se confirmaron dos casos de dos trabajadores de la salud de un hospital privado de Barasat. A pesar de que la OMS determinó que al no conocerse más casos la amenaza de propagación es baja, Tailandia, Malasia, Singapur y Australia han reforzado sus controles fronterizos y protocolos de vigilancia en aeropuertos como medida preventiva. Las autoridades indias rastrearon a 196 contactos que dieron negativo.

Indian authorities traced 196 contacts who tested negative.
