El clarinetista y saxofonista francés Michel Portal falleció el pasado jueves 12 de febrero de 2026 a los 90 años en París.

Considerado un «monumento» del jazz europeo, Portal fue una figura excepcionalmente versátil que se negó a elegir entre el conservatorio y la improvisación. Con su álbum Free Jazz de 1965, ayudó a emancipar la escena europea de la influencia estadounidense. Colaboró con titanes de la música contemporánea como Pierre Boulez y Stockhausen, además de interpretar con maestría conciertos de Mozart.

Ganó tres premios César por sus bandas sonoras, destacando su trabajo en películas como El regreso de Martin Guerre.

French clarinetist and saxophonist Michel Portal passed away on Thursday, February 12, 2026, at the age of 90 in Paris.

Considered a «monument» of European jazz, Portal was an exceptionally versatile figure who refused to choose between the conservatory and improvisation. With his 1965 album Free Jazz, he helped emancipate the European scene from American influence. He collaborated with titans of contemporary music such as Pierre Boulez and Stockhausen, in addition to masterfully performing Mozart concertos.

He won three César Awards for his film scores, notably for his work on films such as The Return of Martin Guerre.

Multi-instrumentalist: Although the clarinet was his primary instrument, he also excelled on the saxophone and bandoneon. His last studio album, titled MP85

Gorguz Teatro presents two performances of Autobiography of Cotton by Cristina Rivera Garza on February 24 and 25 at 8:00 p.m. at the Teatro Helénico.

This is a theatrical adaptation by Felipe Villarreal, directed by Alberto Ontiveros, of a story about the rise and fall of cotton farming in northern Mexico.

The renowned Swiss sculptor and Maître d’Art Erhard Stiefel died on February 14, 2026, in Paris at the age of 85.

Stiefel was a key figure at the Théâtre du Soleil, collaborating closely with Ariane Mnouchkine since 1967. He was named Maître d’Art in 2000 by the French Ministry of Culture. He revived ancient techniques so that the mask would not conceal the actor, but rather reveal their truth.

He created masks for historical productions such as L’Âge d’or, Richard II, and productions inspired by Eastern theater. He maintained that a mask is «asleep» until the actor inhabits it, a process he described as a magical passage from inertness to life.

After decades documenting the «golden age» of Addis Ababa (1969-1975) with more than 30 volumes, Falceto is resuming the project to ensure that this legacy remains available to new generations.

The series is famous for having brought to light figures such as Mulatu Astatke (the father of Ethio-jazz), Mahmoud Ahmed, and Alemayéhu Eshété. It has been confirmed that Falceto will participate in the Big Ears Festival 2026 (March 2026), where there will be a screening of the documentary Ethiopiques: Revolt of the Soul and discussions about the series.
