The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam confirmed the discovery and authenticity of a «new» work by Rembrandt van Rijn in March 2026. The painting, The Vision of Zacharias in the Temple, was determined to have been painted in 1633, shortly after Rembrandt moved to Amsterdam, when he was about 27 years old.

The work was dismissed as an original Rembrandt in 1960 (attributed to his workshop or followers) and remained in a private collection, out of public view, for 65 years.

After two years of intensive research using high-tech scanning (macro X-ray fluorescence), analysis of the panel wood, and stylistic comparisons, Rijksmuseum experts confirmed that the pigments and layering technique are identical to other masterpieces by the painter.

It depicts the biblical moment when the high priest Zechariah receives the announcement from the archangel Gabriel about the birth of his son, John the Baptist. True to Rembrandt’s style, the angel does not physically appear; his presence is indicated by an intense light entering from the upper right corner. The painting has been on public display at the Rijksmuseum since March 4, 2026, on long-term loan from its current owners.
