ARCHITECTURE. Cecilia Puga to Receive the 2026 ArpaFIL Tribute
3 Octubre /October 3th 2026

Chilean architect Cecilia Puga will receive the 2026 ArpaFIL Tribute, an honor recognizing her career and her vision of architecture—one characterized by respect for the surroundings, memory, and heritage.
The award will be presented during the Guadalajara International Book Fair (FIL Guadalajara), where Puga will participate in a session dedicated to reflecting on the relationship between architecture, territory, and heritage. The tribute aims to highlight a career in which architectural intervention is approached through a dialogue with existing spaces and their historical and cultural contexts.
Puga’s work is distinguished by an approach that prioritizes integrating projects into their surroundings, as well as conserving and reinterpreting elements that form part of a place’s memory. This perspective has solidified her standing within the landscape of contemporary Latin American architecture.
The ArpaFIL Tribute—part of the architecture programming at FIL Guadalajara—annually recognizes figures whose careers have contributed to the development of and reflection on the discipline.
For the 2026 edition, the program will focus particularly on concepts such as memory, territory, and heritage—themes linked to how cities and their inhabitants construct identity through their spaces.
Cecilia Puga’s participation will allow these topics to be explored through the experience of an architect whose work raises questions regarding the transformation of territory and the responsibility involved in intervening in contexts of historical and cultural value. This recognition thus becomes part of the programming of one of Guadalajara’s premier platforms for architectural and cultural exchange.

LETRAS. José Luis Martínez S. recibirá el Homenaje Nacional de Periodismo Cultural Fernando Benítez
LITERATURE. José Luis Martínez S. to Receive the Fernando Benítez National Cultural Journalism Award

José Luis Martínez S. (Mexico City, 1955) will receive the Fernando Benítez National Cultural Journalism Award from the Guadalajara International Book Fair (FIL). This honor recognizes his distinguished professional career spanning nearly five decades in the cultural sphere, as well as his contributions to print journalism covering culture, entertainment, society, and politics. The award ceremony will take place on December 6 at the Juan Rulfo Auditorium in Expo Guadalajara, during the Fair’s 40th edition.
The decision regarding this award rests with a committee composed of journalists honored in previous years, who evaluate the work of each recipient. For this edition, José Luis Martínez S. was selected based on his body of work and his steadfast presence in contemporary Mexican journalism. «My greatest pride is being a journalist,» acknowledged Martínez S.—who is also an editor and writer. He stated that he shares this recognition with all his colleagues «who have walked and are walking this path» and expressed his honor at joining the list of journalists who have received this tribute.
In an interview, José Luis Martínez S. mentioned that he had the opportunity to collaborate with the journalist who inspired this award, Fernando Benítez, on the supplement La Jornada Semanal. He recalled learning from Benítez that the work of a cultural journalist «is not limited to the fine arts or documenting strictly artistic endeavors; it goes further, as it also involves a committed social and political perspective,» and that this «commitment can be transformed into literature.»
Born in Mexico City in 1955, José Luis Martínez S. began writing about music, literature, and society in 1979 for the magazine Su Otro Yo. He is currently the director of Laberinto, the cultural supplement of Grupo Milenio. Additionally, he writes the weekly column «El Santo Oficio» for Milenio and has authored books such as La vieja guardia. Memoirs of a Night Owl in Mexico City and Heresies: Readings for Difficult Times. He has written about culture, entertainment, society, and politics for La Revista de la Universidad de México, Nexos, La Jornada Semanal, El Sol de México, El Nacional, and Milenio.
When asked for his perspective on the use of new tools such as artificial intelligence, he acknowledged their evolution but maintained that the fundamental concept of journalism—and its core principles, such as «verified information, adherence to truth, and ethical conduct»—have not changed. He asserted that «journalism is a job requiring constant imagination—not invention or the creation of fiction, but rather a matter of how we execute our work, what we produce, what we offer the reader, and how we captivate them; for as the old adage goes, a reader who leaves does not return.»

The Editorial Merit Award was established by the FIL in 1993 to recognize the craft and vision of prominent figures in the publishing world.

The Guadalajara International Book Fair (FIL Guadalajara), the University of Guadalajara Press, the Upper Secondary Education System, and Radio University of Guadalajara invite young people aged 15 to 20 to participate in the «A Book Saves You» (Un libro te salva) flash fiction contest.
The call for entries stems from an idea expressed by Mexican writer Elena Poniatowska at the 2013 edition of FIL Guadalajara: «a book keeps you company and often saves you.» Based on this premise, the contest seeks to gather the voices, experiences, and imaginative worlds of a new generation of readers and to explore the various ways books can accompany and transform lives. Consequently, entrants may approach the theme from any perspective in a flash fiction piece of no more than 300 words, including the title. Each participant may register only once and submit a single text.
The jury’s decision—which will be final—will consider criteria such as originality, literary quality, narrative ability, use of language, story construction, and creative approach to the theme to select five winning entries. Winners will receive a tablet as a prize, and their stories will be produced by Radio University of Guadalajara for broadcast across its channels and platforms. Additionally, specialists in short-form narrative will select the best entries to form a commemorative anthology published by the University of Guadalajara Press.
