MUSIC. The 24th edition of the National Traditional Mariachi Gathering in Jalisco is underway

Este año, el Encuentro Nacional de Mariachi Tradicional en Jalisco llega a su edición XXIV con la participación de 32 agrupaciones procedentes de Jalisco, Michoacán, Guerrero y Colima que realizarán una serie de conciertos del 4 al 10 de octubre en diversas sedes de seis municipios de Jalisco.

El mariachi tradicional se distingue del mariachi comercial por no incluir trompetas en su dotación instrumental que se compone por lo general de instrumentos de arco, vihuelas, guitarrones, y en ocasiones, tambora.

Las actividades se dividirán entre sedes principales en Guadalajara, como el Edificio Arroniz, el Teatro Degollado y el Ex Convento del Carmen, y foros en los municipios invitados, que son Ajijic, La Barca, Tlaquepaque, San Martín Hidalgo, Tala y La Manzanilla de la Paz. En este marco se realiza también el Coloquio Internacional “Mariachi en el siglo XXI”, que durante tres jornadas el 6, 7 y 8 de octubre en El Colegio de Jalisco, analizará el futuro del género con mesas sobre “música de mi tierra” y sus variantes regionales.

La inauguración oficial será el martes 7 de octubre a las 16:00 horas en el Edificio Arroniz con una “Serenata campera”.

El 8 de octubre a las 18:30 horas, en el Patio Principal del Ex Convento del Carmen, se presentarán El Retoño de Zicuirán, Los Hermanos Figueroa, Los Hermanos Camacho, Conjunto de Arpa Grande La Arena de Oro, Mariachi Antiguo Acatic, Son del Coamil y Mariachi Tradicional Los del Rancho.

“Notas Rurales: Cantos del Mariachi” es el nombre de la exposición que se realizrá en la Sala Elías Nandino, en el marco de la conmemoración de los 65 años de la muerte de Cirilo Marmolejo Cedillo, fundador del cuarteto coculense.

Habrá diversas galas en el Teatro Degollado. El viernes 10 de octubre, la Gala I rendirá homenaje a Concha Michel, figura clave en la recuperación del folclor mexicano, mientras que la Gala II cerrará con la entrega de reconocimientos a los portadores de la tradición. Se entregarán la Medalla Nacional Cirilo Marmolejo (Mariachi), la Presea Francisco Sánchez Flores (persona, institución o grupo), el Galardón Mariachi (Músico por trayectoria en vida), el galardón Gerónimo Méndez (Músico por innovación), y Vicente T. Mendoza (Músico por investigación).

Los organizadores han incluido una serie de fandangos barriales, y en las peculiares Veladas de Minuetes en templos como el Sagrario Metropolitano, se realizará un baile de origen colonial que sobrevive en estas agrupaciones.

También se incluye las “Noches de Cantina” desde el 8 de octubre en establecimientos como Los Equipales o La Maestranza. Mayor información en la página de Facebook de Cultura Jalisco.

The This year, the National Traditional Mariachi Gathering in Jalisco reaches its 24th edition with the participation of 32 groups from Jalisco, Michoacán, Guerrero, and Colima. They will perform a series of concerts from October 4th to 10th at various venues in six municipalities of Jalisco.

Traditional mariachi is distinguished from commercial mariachi by not including trumpets in its instrumental lineup, which generally consists of stringed instruments, vihuelas, guitarrones, and occasionally, tambora.

The activities will be divided between main venues in Guadalajara, such as the Arroniz Building, the Degollado Theater, and the Ex-Convent of Carmen, and forums in the invited municipalities of Ajijic, La Barca, Tlaquepaque, San Martín Hidalgo, Tala, and La Manzanilla de la Paz. Also taking place within this framework is the International Colloquium «Mariachi in the 21st Century.» Over three days, on October 6, 7, and 8, at El Colegio de Jalisco, the event will analyze the future of the genre with panels on «music of my land» and its regional variations.

The official opening will be on Tuesday, October 7, at 4:00 PM in the Arroniz Building with a «Country Serenade.»

On October 8th at 6:30 pm, in the Main Patio of the Ex-Convent of Carmen, El Retoño de Zicuirán, Los Hermanos Figueroa, Los Hermanos Camacho, Conjunto de Arpa Grande La Arena de Oro, Mariachi Antiguo Acatic, Son del Coamil, and Mariachi Tradicional Los del Rancho will perform.

“Rural Notes: Mariachi Songs” is the name of the exhibition that will be held in the Elías Nandino Hall, as part of the commemoration of the 65th anniversary of the death of Cirilo Marmolejo Cedillo, founder of the Coculense quartet.

There will be various galas at the Degollado Theater. On Friday, October 10th, Gala I will pay tribute to Concha Michel, a key figure in the recovery of Mexican folklore, while Gala II will close with the presentation of awards to those who carry on the tradition. The Cirilo Marmolejo National Medal (Mariachi), the Francisco Sánchez Flores Medal (individual, institution, or group), the Mariachi Award (Musician for Lifetime Achievement), the Gerónimo Méndez Award (Musician for Innovation), and the Vicente T. Mendoza Award (Musician for Research) will be awarded.

The organizers have included a series of neighborhood fandangos, and the unique Veladas de Minuetes (Velvets of Minuet) at temples like the Sagrario Metropolitano will feature a dance of colonial origin that survives in these groups.

Also included are the «Noches de Cantina» (Candles Nights) starting October 8 at establishments like Los Equipales and La Maestranza. More information is available on the Cultura Jalisco Facebook page.

La edición 23 del Festival Internacional de Cine de Morelia se realiza del 10 al 19 de octubre de 2025 con un función preinaugural el 9 de octubre y con un programa de actividades con sede en Morelia y Pátzcuaro Michoacán, según anunció Daniela Michelle Concha, directora de dicho festival.

Este año se tendrán 102 películas en competencia, en las categorías de largometrajes, cortometrajes documentales, ficción y animación. Los filmes ganadores serán elegibles para los Premios Oscar.

Otra de las particularidades de esta edición es que se hará un homenaje a María Félix, con siete de sus películas y una exposición fotográfica en el Centro Histórico de Morelia. Gracias al Fondo para la equidad creativa Netflix y Cultural Survival, se abrirá un laboratorio de desarrollo para cineastas indígenas y afrodescendientes.
Se tendrá la Residencia de Escritura Queer Pan Lab en colaboración con el Instituto Francés de América Latina (IFAL) y el Ministerio de Cultura de Francia, y se celebrarán los 25 años de la película Amores Perros.

Entre las películas que se exhibirán destacan: All That’s left of you de Cherien Dabis, Father Mother Sister Brother de Jim Jarmusch, El agente secreto de Kleber Mendonca Filho, Eleanor the Great de Scarlett Johansson, Frankestein de Guillermo del Toro, Hamnet, de Chloë Zhao, Hiedra de Ana Cristina Barragán, La misteriosa mirada del Flamenco de Diego Céspedes, La voz de Hind Rajab de Kaouther Ben Hania, No Other Choice de Park Chan-wook, Once Upon a Time in Gaza de Arab y Tarzan Nasser, Un poeta de Simon Mesa Soto, Resurrection de Bi Gan, Rosemead de Eric Lin, Sentimental Value, de Joachim Trier, La Grazia de Paolo Sorrentino, The History of soudn de Olvier Hermanus, Sirat de Oliver Laxe, Sound of Falling de Mascha Schilinski, The Chronology of water de Kristen Stewart, The Presidents Cake de Hasan Hadi.

Respecto a los artistas invitados la actriz y directora Jodie Foster estará para presenta la película Vie privée de Rebecca Zlotowski, de la cual es la protagonista principal, por otro lado Charlie Kaufman presentará su cortometraje How to Shoot a Goost que estrenó en el Festival de Cine de Venecia y dará una charla en compañía de la poeta Eva H.D. También en este marco Tinta, Sociedad de Escritores Audiovisuales y Cinematográficos de México A.C., rendirá un homenaje a Sabina Berman y la nombrará nueva socia honoraria.

Los organizadores confirmaron que también se tendrá la presencia de Juliette Binoche, Jafar Panahi, Robin Campillo y Lucrecia Martel quien recibirá la medalla de la Biblioteca de la UNAM.

Michelle Concha recordó que en la última edición se tuvo una asistencia de 80 mil espectadores y que el festival es posible gracias a la participación del Gobierno del Estado de Michoacán, el Ayuntamiento de Morelia, las Secretarías de Cultura y Turismo de Michoacán, la Secretaría de Cultura del Gobierno de México, así como instituciones como Cinépolis, Cineteca Nacional, Filmoteca UNAM, Instituto Mexicano de Cinematografía (IMCINE), Fundación Televisa, Embajadas de Francia y España, Acción Cultural Española y Unifrance; además de patrocinadores como Canal 22, Canal 11, Netflix, Sony Pictures, Corazón Films y José Cuervo Tradicional, entre otros.

INTEGRANTES DE LOS JURADOS

El jurado de la Sección de Largometraje Mexicano del FICM será presidido por la realizadora estadounidense Ava DuVernay; y conformado por el reconocido cineasta español nominado al Oscar Pablo Berger, quien presentará en una función especial al aire libre su película nominada al Oscar, Robot Dreams; David Linde, cofundador de Focus Features y productor de aclamados realizadores como Alfonso Cuarón y Alejandro González Iñárritu; y Andrea Pallaoro, destacado realizador italiano.

Como parte del jurado de la Sección de Documental Mexicano estánla académica B. Ruby Rich; Andrei Ujică, aclamado realizador rumano, quien presentará en el 23er FICM una función especial de TWST: Things We Said Today; y Kathy Geritz, reconocida curadora de cine del Pacific Film Archive.
El jurado de la Sección de Cortometraje Mexicano integran Léo Ortuno, coordinador del comité de selección de cortometrajes de la Semana de la Crítica de Cannes; Iván Fund, realizador argentino premiado en el pasado Festival de Berlín por su película El mensaje, la cual presentará en esta edición del FICM; y Edward Venero, director del Festival de Cine de Lima.

El jurado de la Sección Michoacana se compone de Fernanda Becerril, directora ejecutiva de FICUNAM; Dinorath Ramírez, directora general del Centro de Capacitación Cinematográfica (CCC); y Laura Alderete, directora de Promoción del Cine Mexicano en el Instituto Mexicano de Cinematografía (IMCINE).

Las y los miembros del jurado evaluarán las 102 películas que integran la Selección Oficial y determinarán cuáles de ellas serán acreedoras de los distintos reconocimientos en efectivo y en especie, así como del Ojo, escultura creada por el artista michoacano Javier Marín.
Se anunció también que en el caso de los cortometrajes de ficción, documental y animación, así como en el de largometraje documental, el ganador será considerado como elegible para la nominación al Oscar.

The 23rd edition of the Morelia International Film Festival will take place from October 10 to 19, 2025, with a pre-opening screening on October 9 and a program of activities based in Morelia and Pátzcuaro, Michoacán, as announced by Daniela Michelle Concha, director of the festival.

This year, 102 films will be in competition, in the feature film, documentary short, fiction, and animation categories. The winning films will be eligible for the Oscars.

Another special feature of this edition is that there will be a tribute to María Félix, with seven of her films and a photography exhibition in the Historic Center of Morelia. Thanks to the Netflix Creative Equity Fund and Cultural Survival, a development lab for Indigenous and Afro-descendant filmmakers will be opened.
There will be a Queer Pan Lab Writing Residency in collaboration with the French Institute of Latin America (IFAL) and the French Ministry of Culture, and the 25th anniversary of the film Amores Perros will be celebrated.

Regarding the invited artists, actress and director Jodie Foster will be presenting Rebecca Zlotowski’s film, Vie privée, in which she plays the main character. JURY MEMBERS

The jury for the Mexican Feature Film Section of FICM will be chaired by American filmmaker Ava DuVernay; and comprised of renowned Spanish Oscar-nominated filmmaker Pablo Berger, who will present his Oscar-nominated film, Robot Dreams, at a special outdoor screening; David Linde, co-founder of Focus Features and producer of acclaimed filmmakers such as Alfonso Cuarón and Alejandro González Iñárritu; and Andrea Pallaoro, a prominent Italian filmmaker.

The Mexican Documentary Section jury includes academic B. Ruby Rich; Andrei Ujică, acclaimed Romanian filmmaker, who will present a special screening of TWST: Things We Said Today at the 23rd FICM; and Kathy Geritz, renowned film curator at the Pacific Film Archive.

The Mexican Short Film Section jury includes Léo Ortuno, coordinator of the Cannes Critics’ Week short film selection committee; Iván Fund, an Argentine filmmaker who won an award at the last Berlin Film Festival for his film The Message, which he will present at this edition of FICM; and Edward Venero, director of the Lima Film Festival.

The Michoacán Section jury is composed of Fernanda Becerril, executive director of FICUNAM; Dinorath Ramírez, general director of the Centro de Capacitación Cinematográfica (CCC); and Laura Alderete, director of Promotion of Mexican Cinema at the Mexican Institute of Cinematography (IMCINE).
The jury members will evaluate the 102 films that make up the Official Selection and determine which will receive various cash and in-kind awards, as well as the Ojo (Eye), a sculpture created by Michoacán artist Javier Marín.
