Design Week South Africa 2026 will take place from October 8 to 25 under the theme «The Shape of Us,» with official sponsorship from Pinterest. The event offers a look at the culture, heritage, identity, and perspectives of the Global South through architecture, urban planning, and social design.

Rather than centering on a single venue, the festival will transform Johannesburg and Cape Town into open stages for design, featuring activities in studios, galleries, hotels, and public spaces. The first stage will take place in Johannesburg from October 8 to 11, spanning four creative districts: Braamfontein & CBD, Rosebank, The Parks, and Kramerville. Participants include firms and creators such as Pedersen + Lennard, Acre Studio, Wanda Lephoto, and the Kim Sacks School of Ceramics.
The second stage moves to Cape Town from October 22 to 25, curated by creative director PR$DNT HONEY. The program will focus on outdoor furniture, independent fashion, and architectural projects exploring the relationship between people and the coastal environment. These activities will coincide with Pan Afrikan Design Week 2026, taking place from October 21 to 23 at the V&A Waterfront.
Social impact will be a key theme. A highlight among the activities is the conference «Why Is Sandton So Hard to Walk?»—organized by Young Urbanists—which will analyze pedestrian mobility issues and the need to build more walkable, inclusive cities. An open-access reference library—conceived by Beloved May at The Salon and featuring literary and visual materials dedicated to African design—will also be made available. Community workshops will include clay-molding sessions at the Kim Sacks School of Ceramics, alongside activities focused on textile customization and the sustainable repurposing of materials.
The evening program will feature Groove Biennale, an initiative combining architecture, sound, and design within Johannesburg’s alternative scene, thereby extending the festival to new gathering spaces.
Most activities in the creative districts will be free, though some talks, workshops, and tours will require advance registration due to the limited capacity of participating studios and venues. Through this decentralized structure, Design Week South Africa 2026 positions design as a tool for reflecting on identity, community, and the social transformations taking place across the African continent.
