The 2026 Seoul Performing Arts Festival (SPAF) will take place from October 8 to 25 in Seoul, South Korea, under the artistic direction of Kyu Choi. Regarded as one of Asia’s premier avant-garde performing arts gatherings, the festival presents the «Art Multiverse» concept this year—a platform bringing together 19 international and local productions organized around four key themes.

The 2026 edition fosters a dialogue between technology, the body, memory, and new forms of creation. A major focus lies on experiments that incorporate matter, sound, installations, and artificial intelligence into the performing arts, with works exploring aesthetic boundaries and the possibilities of a stage linked to the post-human.

Contemporary dance also plays a central role in the program. The festival examines how the discipline can expand its language beyond physical technique to incorporate visual and technological elements, as well as reflections on the relationship between artificial intelligence and the body. Highlights include Meta-Ballet: Non-Coppélia Manifesto by Ttunchatdance and Yoon Sangeun, and Soapéra, a performance installation by French choreographer Mathilde Monnier.

A key event will be the exchange with the Festival d’Avignon, arriving in Seoul under the «Festival d’Avignon @ SPAF 2026» program. The collaboration includes Oiseau (The Bird), a staged reading based on the novel We Do Not Part by South Korean writer and Nobel Prize in Literature laureate Han Kang. The production will bring together French actress Isabelle Huppert and Korean actress Lee Hye-young on October 10 and 11 at Sogang University’s Mary Hall.

Another thematic strand, titled «Locality and Translocality,» explores the relationships between identity, territory, and memory through works originating in Asia and South America. This section also features staged readings from the Asian Playwrights Project, including Neometropolis by Hong Kong playwright Pat To Yan.

Performances will take place across five cultural venues in Seoul: the National Theater of Korea, SFAC Theater QUAD, Arko & Daehakro Arts Theater, Sogang University’s Mary Hall, and the NC Cultural Foundation Stage Black. The choice of venues also reflects the technical requirements of these experimental productions.

Regarding industry initiatives, SPAF 2026 introduces «PAMS×SPAF Choice» for the first time—a collaboration with the Performing Arts Market in Seoul (PAMS) that will showcase five full-length Korean productions to international audiences and programmers, thereby strengthening the link between artistic creation and global circulation.

The early-bird presale, which offered a 40% discount, has ended, and general ticket sales are now underway. Certain high-demand performances—such as Oiseau and those at the National Theater—utilize independent ticketing systems. With this program, SPAF 2026 fosters an encounter between tradition and experimentation, exploring how technology and new narratives are transforming the contemporary performing arts landscape.
