La 84.ª Convención Mundial de Ciencia Ficción (Worldcon 2026), conocida oficialmente como LAcon V, se celebrará del 27 al 31 de agosto en el área metropolitana de Los Ángeles. Aunque la candidatura llevó el nombre de la ciudad, la sede será el Centro de Convenciones de Anaheim, junto con los hoteles Hilton Anaheim y Anaheim Marriott. El encuentro marcará el regreso de la Worldcon a la región de Los Ángeles después de dos décadas y reunirá a escritores, ilustradores, científicos, cineastas y miles de aficionados a la ciencia ficción y la fantasía.

Entre los invitados más destacados figura Ronald D. Moore, reconocido por su trabajo en Star Trek, por desarrollar la aclamada versión de Battlestar Galactica y por ser cocreador de For All Mankind. También participará la escritora Barbara Hambly, autora de reconocidas obras de fantasía y misterio, mientras que Stan Sakai, creador del cómic Usagi Yojimbo, llegará como uno de los grandes referentes de la ilustración y la novela gráfica.

La representación artística incluye además a Colleen Doran, conocida por su trabajo en cómics como The Sandman, y a Tim Kirk y Geri Sullivan, figuras vinculadas con la tradición de la ilustración y el fandom. Como maestra de ceremonias estará Ursula Vernon, quien también publica literatura de fantasía y terror bajo el seudónimo T. Kingfisher.

La ciencia tendrá un papel central con la participación de las ingenieras aeroespaciales Anita Sengupta y Tracy Drain. Sengupta es conocida por su trabajo en la NASA y por su participación en tecnologías utilizadas en la exploración de Marte, mientras que Drain formó parte del equipo de ingeniería de la misión Europa Clipper.

La agenda contempla una amplia variedad de actividades. La ceremonia inaugural se realizará el jueves 27 de agosto, seguida durante el fin de semana por paneles, presentaciones, encuentros con autores, exhibiciones y la esperada ceremonia de los Premios Hugo, uno de los reconocimientos más importantes de la literatura y los medios de ciencia ficción.

Entre las novedades destaca un festival de cine dedicado a producciones independientes de ciencia ficción, fantasía y terror, además de un Makerspace con talleres de robótica, creación y tecnología. También habrá una celebración especial por los 60 años de Star Trek, así como exposiciones de arte, venta de libros y espacios para coleccionistas y comerciantes.

Con una programación que combina cultura pop, literatura, arte y ciencia, LAcon V busca convertirse en uno de los grandes encuentros internacionales del género en 2026.
