LITERATURE. Philippe Vasset wins the 2026 Prix Médicis for his novel *Dans les grandes lignes

French writer and journalist Philippe Vasset has been awarded the 2026 Prix Médicis in the French-language novel category for his work Dans les grandes lignes, published by Flammarion. The award was announced at the restaurant La Méditerranée in Paris, with Pascale Roze presiding over the jury.
The novel grew out of an unconventional experience: for two years, Vasset traveled across France on foot, following the path of high-voltage power lines. Through this journey, the author constructs a narrative that blends geography, science, and social observation, depicting little-explored landscapes, electrical infrastructure, and encounters with people living on the margins of the territory.
The book is the third installment in a literary project—begun with Livre blanc (2007)—dedicated to uncovering spaces that are invisible or absent from maps. The jury praised the work for being fascinating, geographical, scientific, humorous, and poetic. For his part, Vasset expressed both surprise and satisfaction at receiving recognition for a book he considered an unconventional undertaking.
The 2026 Prix Médicis also honored other authors across various categories. Spanish writer Eva Baltasar won the award for a foreign novel for Ocaso y fascinación (Déclin et fascination), while Jean-Baptiste Del Amo was recognized in the essay category for Une éclaircie.
Additionally, Richard Zenith received a special award for his monumental, 1,280-page biography, Pessoa, l’œuvre-vie.
Established in 1958, the Prix Médicis recognizes innovative literary works and narrative approaches that explore paths distinct from dominant trends.
