LETRAS.

The remains of Guatemalan writer Miguel Ángel Asturias—winner of the 1967 Nobel Prize in Literature—will return to his native country on November 12, after spending 52 years in the Père-Lachaise Cemetery in Paris, France. The repatriation was confirmed by the Minister of Culture and Sports, Luis Méndez Salinas, and the writer’s son, Miguel Ángel Asturias Amado.

The return will be marked by four days of official tributes and cultural activities, culminating on November 15 with his final interment at the Miguel Ángel Asturias Cultural Center.

The decision was initiated by the Nobel laureate’s family, who believe that the current political climate in Guatemala provides the right conditions to reclaim his legacy within the country. Asturias Amado noted that recent citizen mobilizations in defense of democracy served as a sign of hope and a catalyst for bringing his father home—a return that carries deep significance, given that exile defined a large portion of the writer’s life.

The schedule of tributes will include ceremonies at the Candelaria Church, the Popular University (Universidad Popular), the French Embassy, and the National Palace of Culture, where state honors will be bestowed. A Mayan spiritual ceremony, led by Rigoberta Menchú Tum, is also planned.

As part of the tribute, soil collected from Guatemala’s 22 departments, various archaeological sites, and international locations linked to the writer’s life will be placed alongside his ashes.

Meanwhile, his original burial site in Paris will remain as a memorial. In Guatemala, a series of exhibitions and cultural activities will also be organized to celebrate the work and legacy of one of the most prominent figures in Latin American literature.

VIAJES.

British adventurer Karl Bushby, 57, has officially concluded his historic journey around the world on foot, a trek that spanned 28 years. On Monday, he returned to his hometown of Hull, in northeastern England, where he was welcomed by around 500 people, including family, friends, and local officials.

One of the most emotional moments was his reunion with his mother, Angela, and his son, Adam—whom he had left behind as a child. He also met his 12-year-old granddaughter for the first time. Throughout much of his adventure, he was accompanied by a cargo cart he dubbed «The Beast,» which became his constant traveling companion.

Bushby began his challenge in 1998, at the age of 29, setting off from Punta Arenas, Chile, with two rules: he would not use any form of transport, and he would not return home until the entire journey was complete. In total, he walked nearly 50,000 kilometers, crossing 29 countries across four continents.

Among the greatest challenges of the expedition were traversing the Darién Gap, crossing the frozen sea of the Bering Strait, and swimming across parts of the Caspian Sea and the English Channel.

His adventure also faced long interruptions due to visa restrictions in Russia, the 2008 financial crisis, and the COVID-19 pandemic. During these pauses, he even lived temporarily in Mexico before resuming his trek.

German filmmaker Werner Herzog accompanied the adventurer on the final leg to document the feat in the film Walk of Life.

Upon his arrival, Bushby noted that his return would not have been possible without the support of many people—and of the Earth itself, which he acknowledged as a fundamental part of his extraordinary journey.

TEATRO.

The theater company La Coperacha, hailing from Guadalajara, is heading to Italy for the international premiere of Niño Ángel, Niño Diablo (“Angel Child, Devil Child”). This latest production—a large-scale puppet opera—explores fundamental elements of Mexican culture and identity, including mestizaje (cultural and ethnic blending).

The production draws inspiration from the traditional Mexican pastorela (a type of folk nativity play) to craft an artistic experience that integrates music, theater, and puppetry. Bringing the work to the European stage required two years of preparation.

The project features an original musical score by Juan Trigos, who collaborated with La Coperacha to develop a staging that revisits elements of Mexican tradition through a contemporary lens.

The international premiere will take place at the “Achille Peri – Claudio Merulo” Conservatory of Reggio Emilia and Castelnovo ne’ Monti.
