CINE.

Guillermo del Toro has come to the defense of Alejandro González Iñárritu amidst criticism leveled at Digger, the Mexican director’s new film starring Tom Cruise. Via social media, the filmmaker from Guadalajara questioned the stance taken by certain specialized media outlets that advised audiences to skip the theatrical release and wait for the film to arrive on streaming platforms.

The controversy arose after US and international media outlets—including IGN—published unfavorable reviews of the production, which debuted with a 54% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Some of these publications even suggested that undecided viewers wait until the film became available on services like HBO Max.

In response to these opinions, Del Toro described such recommendations as «utterly petty» and defended Iñárritu’s cinematic vision. The Oscar winner noted that, regardless of whether every viewer enjoys the film, it is a work that stands out for its scale, ambition, and complexity—qualities intended to be experienced on the big screen.

To bolster his argument, the director of Pan’s Labyrinth pointed out that certain films now considered cinematic touchstones were also met with harsh criticism upon their initial release. He cited The Big Lebowski, The King of Comedy, and The Counselor as examples of works where the initial reception did not necessarily dictate their ultimate standing.

Del Toro also suggested that the reaction from some critics might stem from a generational gap regarding the nature of Digger—a satire tackling themes such as climate change and the influence wealthy elites exert over public narratives. The filmmaker stated that he would continue to share the positive comments audiences have spontaneously expressed about the movie.

Digger represents an ambitious project that Iñárritu and Tom Cruise worked on for years, championing an auteur-driven film within an industry dominated by franchises, sequels, and established properties. Through his support, Del Toro once again demonstrates his close bond with Iñárritu and his willingness to champion cinematic projects that seek to take artistic risks.

ARQUITECTURA. Cecilia Puga recibirá el Homenaje ArpaFIL 2026

3 Octubre /October 3th 2026

Chilean architect Cecilia Puga will receive the 2026 ArpaFIL Tribute, an honor recognizing her career and her vision of architecture—one characterized by respect for the surroundings, memory, and heritage.

The award will be presented during the Guadalajara International Book Fair (FIL Guadalajara), where Puga will participate in a session dedicated to reflecting on the relationship between architecture, territory, and heritage. The tribute aims to highlight a career in which architectural intervention is approached through a dialogue with existing spaces and their historical and cultural contexts.

Puga’s work is distinguished by an approach that prioritizes integrating projects into their surroundings, as well as conserving and reinterpreting elements that form part of a place’s memory. This perspective has solidified her standing within the landscape of contemporary Latin American architecture.

The ArpaFIL Tribute—part of the architecture programming at FIL Guadalajara—annually recognizes figures whose careers have contributed to the development of and reflection on the discipline.

For the 2026 edition, the program will focus particularly on concepts such as memory, territory, and heritage—themes linked to how cities and their inhabitants construct identity through their spaces.

Cecilia Puga’s participation will allow these topics to be explored through the experience of an architect whose work raises questions regarding the transformation of territory and the responsibility involved in intervening in contexts of historical and cultural value. This recognition thus becomes part of the programming of one of Guadalajara’s premier platforms for architectural and cultural exchange.

ARTE.

The former apartment and studio of American artist Jackson Pollock in New York City has gone on the market for $1.99 million. The property, located in Manhattan’s West Village, is a one-bedroom loft returning to the open market for the first time in a decade, listed by Compass Real Estate.

The property’s listing coincides with the opening of the exhibition «Krasner and Pollock: Past Continuous,» dedicated to Pollock and his wife, fellow artist Lee Krasner, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
The loft occupies the top floor of a Federal-style house built in 1827 on land that once belonged to former U.S. Vice President Aaron Burr. In 1932, at the age of 20, Pollock moved into the apartment with his brother Charles and sister-in-law. They both used the space for painting: Charles worked in the front room and Jackson in the back.

The property is approximately 64 square meters, with 4.2-meter-high ceilings, exposed wooden beams, and exposed brick walls. Four skylights in the sloping roof provide abundant natural light, a feature that encouraged artistic work.

The current owner, tech entrepreneur Fergus Hurley, purchased the loft off the market in 2021 for $1.3 million and undertook a renovation that included an open-plan kitchen, a modern bathroom, and a mezzanine used as an office. The property also has access to a communal garden with a barbecue area.
As a unique touch, during the pandemic lockdown, Hurley painted a three-meter-long artwork in the garden inspired by Pollock’s signature drip technique. The painting remains in the living room and will be available for purchase by the new owner through separate negotiations.

American rapper Rick Ross, whose real name is William Leonard Roberts II, was arrested in Miami Beach after voluntarily turning himself in to the police early Thursday morning, October 1, 2026. The artist faces a felony charge of aggravated assault by strangulation and a misdemeanor charge of physical assault, stemming from an allegation of domestic violence.

After being booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, Ross appeared before a judge via video link. His bail was set at $5,000, which he paid hours later to secure his release. As a precautionary measure, the court also issued a restraining order prohibiting him from approaching or contacting the alleged victim.

According to the police report, the incident allegedly took place on August 28 at the rapper’s Star Island mansion. The complainant—who stated she had been in a year-long relationship with Ross and lived with him—claimed the artist woke her up during a fit of jealousy triggered by an Instagram photo or tag.

According to her testimony, Ross allegedly slapped her, struck her in the chest, pulled her hair, and slammed her against a wall. He also allegedly used the collar of the sweatshirt she was wearing to cut off her air supply and caused an injury to her lip. The woman provided sworn statements and photographs of her injuries, while security cameras captured part of the subsequent events.

Ross declined to make a statement to the police on the advice of his lawyers. However, upon leaving the detention center, he claimed to be «totally innocent» and described the accusations as a «fabrication.» His defense team entered a plea of not guilty and requested a jury trial.

His arraignment is scheduled for October 22.
