OCTUBRE 2026 NOTAS BREVES

ARTE. Hospitalizan a Vittorio Sgarbi

1 Octubre /October 1th 2026

Italian art critic and politician Vittorio Sgarbi, 74, remains hospitalized in serious condition at the Gemelli Polyclinic in Rome, according to sources at the medical center. The former Undersecretary of Culture was admitted in late September and remains in intensive care, with his prognosis guarded due to health complications.
The hospitalization comes amid a complex period for Sgarbi, also marked by legal proceedings and controversies related to his professional activities. In September 2016, the Italian Court of Auditors ruled in his favor and rejected a civil claim exceeding 200,000 euros. Inspectors had accused him of allegedly causing harm to the public treasury by giving 121 lectures and providing private professional services while holding public office. Following the ruling, the state will have to cover the legal costs.

However, Sgarbi still faces criminal investigations related to an alleged money laundering case and possession of stolen goods. The case is linked to The Capture of Saint Peter, a Baroque painting by Rutilio Manetti that disappeared in 2013 from an Italian castle. A modified copy of the work was later presented by Sgarbi.

The investigation into the painting contributed to the controversy surrounding his tenure and ended with his resignation as Undersecretary of Culture in early 2024. While authorities continue their investigation, his health condition keeps the controversial figure in Italian politics and the art world in the spotlight.

LETRAS. Salman Rushdie recibirá reconocimiento del Premio Nacional del Libro

1 Octubre /October 1th 2026

Author Salman Rushdie will receive the Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters during the 77th National Book Awards ceremony, to be held on November 18, 2026, in Manhattan, New York.

The honor, bestowed by the National Book Foundation, recognizes the career of Rushdie—author of more than 20 books and one of contemporary literature’s most renowned figures. Born in Mumbai, India, and a U.S. citizen for a decade, the writer stated that the award reinforces his sense of belonging and that he now feels fully a part of American literature.

The medal will be presented by his friend and fellow writer of Indian origin, Kiran Desai. Rushdie will become the 39th recipient of the award and only the fourth person born outside the United States to receive it, following Saul Bellow, Isabel Allende, and Art Spiegelman.

The tribute follows years marked by the 2022 stabbing attack he survived. That experience inspired his memoir Knife: Meditations After an Attempted Murder—a work that earned him his only competitive National Book Award nomination in 2024 and was recently adapted into a documentary by director Alex Gibney.

Pediatrician and activist Perri Klass will also be honored at the same gala, receiving the Literarian Award for Outstanding Service to the American Literary Community.

CELEBRIDADES. Murió Lito Sousa

1 Octubre /October 1th 2026

Brazilian aviation specialist, pilot, and content creator Lito Sousa died on Thursday, October 1, 2026, at the age of 59, at the Albert Einstein Hospital in São Paulo. His passing was confirmed by his wife, Mila Seidl, in an emotional video posted on social media.

Sousa—whose full name was Joselito Geraldo de Sousa—had been diagnosed in August with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD), a rare, aggressive, and rapidly progressive neurodegenerative disorder affecting brain tissue. As the disease advanced and he lost motor function, he received special authorization from Anvisa in early September to undergo an experimental treatment. However, there is no proven cure for the condition.

Earlier in 2026, he had also been diagnosed with early-stage prostate cancer and had previously dealt with neurological inflammation.

With a career spanning over 36 years in the aviation industry, Sousa worked for airlines such as Varig, Transbrasil, and United Airlines. He gained widespread popularity through his YouTube channel, «Aviões e Músicas,» which has over four million subscribers. Through the channel, he shared knowledge about aviation safety, explained how aircraft operate, and helped people overcome their fear of flying.

Following his death, the Brazilian Air Force and ANAC expressed their condolences and acknowledged his contributions to aviation. He is survived by his wife and a seven-year-old son.
