El Instituto Politécnico Nacional (IPN), a través de la Dirección de Difusión Cultural, lanzó la Primera Bienal de Literatura Universitaria, una convocatoria dedicada al género de novela de terror con el objetivo de impulsar la creación artística y descubrir nuevos talentos entre estudiantes de educación superior.
El concurso está dirigido a estudiantes activos de licenciatura de instituciones públicas o privadas de todo México. Los participantes podrán presentar obras escritas en español o en alguna lengua originaria del país; en este último caso deberán incluir una traducción al español.
Las novelas deberán ser estrictamente inéditas y tener una extensión de entre 70 y 90 cuartillas. Uno de los principales requisitos establece que los trabajos deberán haber sido elaborados sin utilizar herramientas de inteligencia artificial en ninguna etapa del proceso creativo. El plagio también será motivo de descalificación.
La recepción de manuscritos permanecerá abierta hasta el 18 de septiembre de 2026. El fallo estará a cargo de un jurado integrado por tres escritores independientes, ajenos al IPN, y los resultados se darán a conocer a finales de noviembre.
La convocatoria contempla un único premio ganador, que incluye un estímulo económico de 25 mil pesos y la publicación de la novela dentro del catálogo editorial del Instituto Politécnico Nacional.
Con esta iniciativa, el IPN busca fortalecer la participación de jóvenes universitarios en la literatura y abrir un espacio para nuevas voces dentro de uno de los géneros narrativos con mayor presencia entre los lectores.

Manuscript submissions will be accepted until September 18, 2026. The winning entry will be selected by a jury of three independent writers unaffiliated with the IPN, and the results will be announced in late November.
The contest offers a single prize, consisting of a cash award of 25,000 pesos and the publication of the novel in the National Polytechnic Institute’s publishing catalog.
Through this initiative, the IPN seeks to strengthen university students’ engagement with literature and create a platform for new voices within one of the narrative genres most popular among readers.

La soprano rumana Ileana Cotrubas falleció el 20 de agosto de 2026, a los 87 años, en Bucarest, Rumanía. La noticia fue confirmada por la Ópera Nacional de Bucarest, que la reconoció como una de las voces más importantes del siglo XX y una figura fundamental del arte lírico internacional.

Además de su talento vocal, Cotrubas fue reconocida por su carácter y firmeza artística. En distintas ocasiones rechazó montajes que, a su juicio, alteraban el sentido de las obras clásicas, llegando incluso a abandonar producciones.
Tras retirarse de los escenarios en 1990, dedicó buena parte de su vida a la enseñanza mediante clases magistrales. Entre sus alumnas destacó la soprano Angela Gheorghiu.
Cabe aclarar que algunas publicaciones difundieron erróneamente que Cotrubas tenía 98 años al morir; esa edad correspondió al cantante Johnny Torales, fallecido también recientemente.

El escritor mexicano David Toscana presentó El ejército ciego, novela con la que obtuvo el Premio Alfaguara de Novela 2026 y que transporta al lector a Bulgaria y al Imperio bizantino durante la Edad Media.
La historia parte de un episodio ocurrido en 1014, tras la batalla de Klyuch, cuando el emperador bizantino Basilio II capturó a miles de soldados búlgaros y ordenó cegarlos. Toscana retoma este hecho histórico para imaginar qué ocurrió con los sobrevivientes y cómo enfrentaron el regreso a su tierra después de la tragedia.
En la novela, los hombres deben reconstruir sus vidas a partir de otros sentidos y de la memoria. El autor sigue sus historias como panaderos, herreros o criadores de cerdos, explorando temas como la violencia, la dignidad, la resistencia y la capacidad de reinventarse después de una derrota.
Toscana explicó que descubrió este episodio histórico hace más de una década y conservó la idea durante años antes de convertirla en novela. El resultado fue descrito por el jurado del Premio Alfaguara como una “fábula oscura”, con elementos de humor negro y una mirada que se aleja de las narraciones tradicionales sobre los vencedores.
Ayer 19 de agosto, el escritor presentó la obra en la Casa Universitaria del Libro de la UNAM, acompañado por la escritora Mónica Lavín. Como parte de la promoción, Toscana viajará a Bulgaria, donde la novela ya fue traducida al idioma local.

Mexican writer David Toscana presented El ejército ciego, the novel that earned him the 2026 Alfaguara Novel Prize and transports the reader to Bulgaria and the Byzantine Empire during the Middle Ages.
The story stems from an event in 1014, following the Battle of Kleidion (Klyuch), when Byzantine Emperor Basil II captured thousands of Bulgarian soldiers and ordered them blinded. Toscana takes this historical event as a starting point to imagine the fate of the survivors and how they coped with returning to their homeland after the tragedy.
In the novel, the men must rebuild their lives relying on other senses and memory. The author follows their stories as bakers, blacksmiths, or pig farmers, exploring themes such as violence, dignity, resilience, and the capacity to reinvent oneself after defeat.
Toscana explained that he discovered this historical episode over a decade ago and held onto the idea for years before turning it into a novel. The jury for the Alfaguara Prize described the result as a «dark fable,» featuring elements of black humor and a perspective that moves away from traditional narratives focused on the victors.
Yesterday, August 19, the writer presented the work at UNAM’s Casa Universitaria del Libro, accompanied by author Mónica Lavín. As part of the promotional tour, Toscana will travel to Bulgaria, where the novel has already been translated into the local language.
With El ejército ciego, the author also asserts literature’s freedom to explore settings far removed from the stereotypes often associated with Mexican narrative.

El Festival Internacional del Globo (FIG) 2026 se celebra este fin de semana, del viernes 21 al domingo 23 de agosto, en la Ciudad Mitad del Mundo, ubicada en San Antonio de Pichincha, al norte de Quito, Ecuador. La quinta edición es organizada por la Prefectura de Pichincha y reúne globos aerostáticos, música, gastronomía y actividades familiares.

Uno de los principales atractivos son los vuelos de más de 20 globos, pilotados por especialistas de Ecuador, México y Brasil. Los despegues se realizan entre las 06:00 y las 08:00 horas, siempre sujetos a las condiciones climáticas. Por ello, las puertas del complejo abren desde las 05:00 para quienes buscan asegurar un buen lugar.

Después de los vuelos, la programación continúa con ferias gastronómicas y de emprendimientos, exhibiciones de vehículos clásicos, 4×4 y modificados, simuladores de Fórmula 1 y espectáculos de parapente.

Por la tarde y noche se realizan conciertos en la Arena TOP, con artistas como Dayanara, Swing Original Monks, Gerardo Morán, Segundo Rosero y Máximo Escaleras. También se ofrece el espectáculo de globos iluminados, en el que las aeronaves se encienden al ritmo de la música.

The 2026 International Balloon Festival (FIG) takes place this weekend—from Friday, August 21, to Sunday, August 23—at the Ciudad Mitad del Mundo (Middle of the World City) complex in San Antonio de Pichincha, north of Quito, Ecuador. Organized by the Pichincha Prefecture, this fifth edition features hot air balloons, music, gastronomy, and family activities.
