La muestra, inaugurada el 15 de julio por la Fundación Mozarteum, forma parte de los homenajes por el 270º aniversario del nacimiento de Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
Las figuras, de 50 centímetros de altura, fueron diseñadas por el artista conceptual alemán Ottmar Hörl. Representan al compositor acompañado por su perro Pimperl y fueron distribuidas en lugares como los jardines de Mirabell, distintos pabellones y el predio de la antigua residencia de Mozart.
La desaparición se produjo de forma gradual en menos de dos semanas. Inicialmente se reportó el robo de 80 esculturas, pero la cifra aumentó rápidamente hasta 210, dejando grandes espacios vacíos en la instalación.

Cada estatuilla tiene un valor comercial estimado de entre 90 y 100 euros. Hasta ahora, no se ha detectado ninguna a la venta en plataformas de subastas o mercados digitales. La organización tampoco podrá reponerlas: las reservas eran limitadas y el fabricante suspendió temporalmente la producción.
Pese al robo masivo, la Fundación Mozarteum mantendrá abierta la exposición con las piezas restantes hasta el 30 de agosto de 2026, fecha prevista para su clausura.

The 50-centimeter-tall figures were designed by German conceptual artist Ottmar Hörl. They depict the composer accompanied by his dog, Pimperl, and were distributed across locations such as the Mirabell Gardens, various pavilions, and the grounds of Mozart’s former residence.
The disappearances occurred gradually over a period of less than two weeks. Initially, the theft of 80 sculptures was reported, but the figure quickly rose to 210, leaving large empty spaces within the installation.
Hörl considers it unlikely that these were isolated thefts. Although losses of around 10% are common in this type of urban exhibition, the disappearance of nearly two-thirds of the pieces suggests, according to the artist, a coordinated operation.
Each statuette has an estimated market value of between 90 and 100 euros. So far, none have been spotted for sale on auction platforms or online marketplaces. The organization will not be able to replace them, either: supplies were limited, and the manufacturer has temporarily halted production.
