El Colectivo Teatro del Abandono presenta, del 7 al 22 de agosto, El Tributo a Fray Antonio Alcalde, ciclo de funciones gratuitas que busca acercar al público a la vida y legado de uno de los grandes benefactores de Guadalajara.

Fray Antonio Alcalde fue impulsor de obras fundamentales para la ciudad, entre ellas el Hospital Civil, la Universidad de Guadalajara y el Santuario de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, además de distinguirse por su labor en favor de personas y familias necesitadas.

Las presentaciones, todas a las 19:45 horas, comienzan el viernes 7 de agosto en el Santuario de Guadalupe; continúan el sábado 8 en el Templo de Santa Teresa (Morelos 525); jueves 13 en el Templo Santo Domingo de Guzmán (Juan Zubarán 2214); sábado 15 en la Parroquia de María Reparadora (Pino 2345), y viernes 21 en la Parroquia Santa Catalina de Siena (Puerto Soto la Marina 1685).

Para Berenice González, cofundadora de Teatro del Abandono junto con Franco Méndez, el teatro es un espacio para generar encuentros, formar criterio y mirar el mundo desde una perspectiva propia. Méndez, por su parte, considera el teatro una forma de vida que le da sentido a cada día.

El presbítero José Guadalupe Dueñas, párroco del Santuario de Guadalupe, destacó la importancia de recuperar la figura de Alcalde, cuya huella permanece en Guadalajara, aunque aún es poco conocida por las nuevas generaciones. Para la Iglesia, subrayó, se trata de un personaje cuya obra lo perfila como candidato a la santidad.

Por otro lado el colectivo realiza presentaciones de la obra Mutis por el Foro en la galería Espacio Entreabierto ubicada en Mexicaltzingo 1683 A, en la Colonia Americana, al igual que continúan con presentaciones del poemario de González titulado Canto a Nebulosa.

Fray Antonio Alcalde was the driving force behind key city landmarks—including the Civil Hospital, the University of Guadalajara, and the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Guadalupe—and was distinguished by his charitable work on behalf of needy individuals and families.

All performances begin at 7:45 PM, starting on Friday, August 7, at the Sanctuary of Guadalupe; continuing on Saturday, August 8, at the Church of Santa Teresa (Morelos 525); Thursday, August 13, at the Church of Santo Domingo de Guzmán (Juan Zubarán 2214); Saturday, August 15, at the Parish of María Reparadora (Pino 2345); and Friday, August 21, at the Parish of Santa Catalina de Siena (Puerto Soto la Marina 1685).

For Berenice González—who co-founded Teatro del Abandono with Franco Méndez—theater is a space for fostering connections, developing critical thinking, and viewing the world from one’s own perspective. Méndez, for his part, views theater as a way of life that gives meaning to each day.

Father José Guadalupe Dueñas, parish priest of the Sanctuary of Guadalupe, highlighted the importance of revisiting the figure of Alcalde; while his mark remains on Guadalajara, his story is still little known among younger generations. For the Church, he noted, Alcalde is a figure whose life’s work positions him as a candidate for sainthood.

Additionally, the collective is staging performances of the play Mutis por el Foro at the Espacio Entreabierto gallery (located at Mexicaltzingo 1683 A in the Colonia Americana neighborhood) and continuing presentations of González’s poetry collection, Canto a Nebulosa.
