AGOSTO 2026 NOTAS BREVES

DURANGO.

The fourth edition of the “Dolores del Río” Mexican Film Festival wrapped up its activities in Durango following a three-day run from August 28 to 30, 2026. The historic Victoria Theater served as the main venue for the event, which featured screenings, premieres, and activities aimed at promoting national cinema and local audiovisual talent.

The festival opened with a gala screening of En el camino (On the Road), directed by David Pablos and starring Víctor Prieto. The film holds 13 Ariel Award nominations and was selected to represent Mexico in the race for the 2027 Oscars.

Local talent was highlighted through the “Cine hecho en Durango” (Cinema Made in Durango) section, showcasing works by members of the Semillero Creativo de Cinematografía (Creative Film Incubator) and the Audiovisual Cluster. Another highlight was the premiere of Amor en los tiempos inertes (Love in Inert Times), a short film by Emanuel G. Guzmán.

One of the most anticipated moments was the awards ceremony for the “Rally 48 en Corto” 2026, a challenge that tasked teams with creating a film within a limited timeframe. The jury consisted of Kyzza Terrazas, Florencia Ríos, and Juan José Hinojosa.

First place went to Insolvente, which received a prize of 40,000 pesos; second place went to No les digas que estoy vivo (Don’t Tell Them I’m Alive), winning 20,000 pesos; and Carnales (Brothers) received an honorable mention and 10,000 pesos.

However, the event also faced organizational difficulties. The national premiere of Volar y otros deseos (To Fly and Other Desires) was cancelled just minutes before the screening—a situation publicly criticized by its director, Verónica Marín, who noted that she and her team had traveled from Aguascalientes and had previously confirmed the technical compatibility of the film files.

In response to the criticism, the Durango State Institute of Culture (ICED) issued a public apology, acknowledged operational errors, and accepted responsibility for the incident. Despite this incident, the festival concluded its fourth edition with a program focused on strengthening film exhibition and opening up spaces for new voices in Mexican cinema.

MEDIOS.

Italian cartoonist, advertising professional, director, and television writer Guido De Maria passed away on the morning of Monday, August 31, 2026, in Modena, Italy, at the age of 93. Considered one of the most innovative creative figures in 20th-century Italian popular culture, he left a significant mark on television, advertising, and the world of comics.

The news prompted reactions from officials and cultural representatives in Emilia-Romagna. The mayors of Modena and Bologna, as well as regional authorities, highlighted his wit, irony, and ability to transform the language of comic books into a mass-market phenomenon.

One of his greatest legacies was Gulp! Fumetti in TV, a program created for RAI in the early 1970s that later became known as SuperGulp!. The concept revolutionized how comics were brought to television: instead of relying on traditional animation, it preserved the original comic panels and used voice actors to perform the characters’ dialogue, thereby replicating the experience of reading a comic book.

Together with cartoonist Bonvi, De Maria created Nick Carter, a clumsy and amusing American detective who became one of the show’s most popular characters. He was also responsible for Giumbolo, the SuperGulp! mascot who starred in the closing theme song.

His career was also closely linked to advertising. As the founder of Vimder Film, he directed numerous commercials for Carosello, one of Italian television’s most iconic advertising segments. Among his most memorable works were campaigns for Loacker and Amarena Fabbri.

During the 1990s, he served as co-director of the humor magazine Comix and maintained a close relationship with the music world. It was De Maria who formally registered singer-songwriter Francesco Guccini with SIAE (the Italian Society of Authors and Publishers). In 2015, he received the Tenco Award in Sanremo in recognition of his career achievements. His death marks the passing of a key figure in Italian popular culture, whose work helped bridge comics, television, advertising, and music with a style defined by humor and innovation.

NEGOCIOS.

With an 80-year history, five production plants, nearly a thousand employees, over 2,500 products, and a commercial network of around 400 stores, PRISA marks its anniversary with its sights set on a new phase of national and international expansion.

The Jalisco-based company, specializing in paints and coatings, celebrated its eightieth anniversary in Guadalajara at a ceremony attended by members of its Board of Directors, executives, and representatives of the Jalisco state government. Founded in 1946, PRISA maintains a presence throughout Mexico through direct service, distributors, dealerships, and retail outlets.

As part of its growth strategy, the company aims to specifically strengthen its operations in the south of the country, where it had historically maintained a smaller presence. «The idea is to keep growing, not only domestically but also internationally,» noted Juan Carlos Caballero, CEO of PRISA.

Its portfolio exceeds 2,500 SKUs and includes architectural paints, industrial coatings, anti-corrosion systems, waterproofing products, enamels, automotive and traffic-marking products, as well as solutions for wood, sports surfaces, and food-grade coatings.

International expansion is also part of its plans. Currently, products developed in Mexico reach markets such as the United States, Canada, China, Japan, Venezuela, and various Latin American countries. The company seeks to position its solutions as high-quality, specialized products.

During the celebration, the legacy of René Rivial León and Lupita Vergara de Rivial—key figures in the company’s consolidation—was recognized. Rivial León’s business career and his participation in organizations and initiatives linked to the economic, industrial, and social development of Jalisco were also highlighted.

Representing Governor Pablo Lemus, Chief of Staff Alberto Esquer Gutiérrez underscored PRISA’s role in job creation and its contribution to the state. For the company, the 80-year milestone represents not just a celebration, but the starting point of a new phase focused on innovation, professionalization, and growth. “The great challenge ahead of us is to continue building a future for another 80 years,” stated Caballero.

MEDIOS.

French photographer and editor Jean-François Leroy, co-founder and longtime director of Visa pour l’Image, passed away in Paris on Monday, August 31, 2026, at the age of 69, following a battle with cancer. His death is a loss for international photojournalism and comes as the 38th edition of the festival—which he helped transform into one of the most important gatherings for documentary photography—is underway.

Leroy died just two days after the start of Visa pour l’Image, held from August 29 to September 13, 2026, in Perpignan, France. For the first time in nearly four decades, he was unable to attend in person due to his health, though he remained involved in the technical and editorial organization of this edition.

The festival organizers and his family confirmed that the photographer died in the morning at a Parisian hospital after a long struggle with cancer.

Throughout his career, Leroy worked for outlets such as Sipa Press and Photo Magazine, championing a rigorous approach to photojournalism and the work of professionals who document events directly in the field. He was also critical of the speed at which unverified images circulate on social media and, in recent years, took a firm stance against the rise of AI-generated imagery.

For Leroy, documentary photography had to preserve the link between the event, the photographer, and the reality being recorded. His work at the helm of Visa pour l’Image helped establish Perpignan as a hub for photographers, editors, and journalists from around the world.

Following his passing, the festival’s leadership—currently headed by Delphine Lelu—pledged to keep his legacy alive and continue working to ensure Perpignan remains an «international beacon» for those who tell stories through images. Leroy’s death thus leaves a profound mark on a discipline to which he dedicated decades, championing the value of visual testimony and the irreplaceable role of the human photographer.

MODA.

British designer John Galliano has cancelled the retrospective John Galliano: Horizons, which was scheduled to open in the spring of 2027 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, coinciding with the Met Gala. The decision was announced in a joint statement by the museum and the designer following a wave of strong criticism from Jewish organizations, political leaders, and some donors.

The exhibition was set to span four decades of Galliano’s career, from his formative years at Central Saint Martins to his tenures at the helm of Givenchy, Christian Dior, and Maison Margiela. Had it gone ahead, it would have been only the third Costume Institute retrospective dedicated to a living designer, following exhibitions for Yves Saint Laurent and Rei Kawakubo.

A major point of contention was the planned opening date—May 3, 2027—which would have coincided with the start of Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day.

The controversy also reignited memories of the 2011 incident that defined the designer’s career, when he was fired from Dior and subsequently convicted in France for racist slurs and antisemitic remarks made at a Paris bar. Although Galliano has publicly expressed remorse and spent years working on his personal recovery, criticism mounted regarding the Met project.

The designer stated that he decided to withdraw the exhibition to prevent the controversy from affecting the museum, acknowledging that a tribute to his career could be painful for some people. He also reiterated his regret toward the Jewish and Asian communities.

Met Director Max Hollein and Anna Wintour, a key driving force behind the project, agreed to withdraw the exhibition ahead of a crucial board meeting.

For the time being, the cancellation will not affect the 2027 Met Gala, which remains scheduled. The museum will need to determine a new theme for the event and announce details for the upcoming edition soon—now entirely independent of Galliano.

TV. EL HALFTIME SHOW DEL SUPER BOWL, UN ESPACIO DE RECONOCIMIENTO CULTURAL

Guadalajara, Jalisco, 10 de febrero de 2026

Guadalajara, Jalisco, February 10th, 2026.

The Super Bowl Halftime Show is one of the most representative examples of contemporary symbolic territoriality. Although it physically takes place in a stadium during an American football game, it occurs simultaneously in millions of homes, digital platforms, social networks, media outlets, and fan communities distributed across the globe.

The Super Bowl no longer seems to belong to a single city, or even to the United States. Due to its global impact, its nature is more akin to a global network of meanings.

The transformation began in 1993 with Michael Jackson’s performance during Super Bowl XXVII. Until then, halftime shows were seen as a recreational break within the game. However, with the appearance of the so-called King of Pop, levels of attention were generated that were comparable to, and even surpassed, some moments of the sporting event itself. The NFL and its entire marketing team understood that they possessed an independent cultural product capable of mobilizing global audiences.
From then on, the artist ceased to be a mere accompaniment and became a strategic asset. It could be said that from 1993 to 2004, the halftime show solidified its reputation with the presence of internationally renowned figures such as Diana Ross, Gloria Estefan, Aerosmith, U2, Shania Twain, and Janet Jackson. From one year to the next, media coverage generated cultural narratives that transcended the sporting event itself.

Following the controversy involving Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake in 2004, the NFL opted for artists considered reliable and with established prestige who, in the organizers’ view, would be able to «protect» the NFL brand, such as Paul McCartney, The Rolling Stones, Prince, Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen, and The Who.
This controversy was significant. During the halftime show of Super Bowl XXXVIII in 2004, Timberlake, while performing «Rock Your Body,» partially tore Jackson’s costume at the very end of the performance, briefly exposing her breast on live television. The incident was broadcast to millions of viewers and generated enormous controversy in the United States, both for its content and for its uncensored airing. It later became known as a “wardrobe malfunction,” a term that entered the media and regulatory debate about the limits of live television.

The controversy had significant consequences: fines for CBS, a tightening of decency standards on American television, and a disproportionate impact on Janet Jackson’s career, who faced greater media backlash than Timberlake. This also sparked a debate about gender and racial inequality in the entertainment industry.

Starting in 2013 with Beyoncé, Bruno Mars, Katy Perry, Coldplay, Lady Gaga, Shakira, Jennifer Lopez, and The Weeknd, success ceased to be measured solely by television ratings. Entertainment began to be evaluated through digital streams, global trends, memes, social media interactions, and on-demand consumption. The Halftime Show has transformed into a transmedia event, and in 2023, with Apple Music becoming the main sponsor, a new cultural dynamic was solidified. Celebrities like Rihanna, Usher, Kendrick Lamar, and Bad Bunny now represent entire cultural communities; beyond being musical stars, they are identity symbols capable of mobilizing global symbolic territories.
Over the last five years, one of the main transformations the show has undergone is that it no longer sells songs, but rather markets identity. Rihanna turned her 2023 performance into a statement about motherhood, autonomy, and artistic comeback. Kendrick Lamar, in 2025, articulated discourses related to African American memory, racial representation, and urban culture, and Bad Bunny, in 2026, brought Spanish, Puerto Rico, and Latin identity to the forefront of the most-watched event in the United States.

In other words, these artists have functioned as nodes that connect geographically dispersed communities united by shared cultural references. The Super Bowl economic phenomenon functions as a multi-level platform where broadcasting rights, global advertising, tourism, streaming, sponsorships, sports betting, and music marketing converge.

One statistic that demonstrates this assertion is that in 2026, a thirty-second commercial reached prices close to $10 million. Currently, the Halftime Show is the point of convergence for all these industries and one of the spaces with the greatest generation of symbolic value on the planet.

Especially significant is the case of Bad Bunny, whose performance became the fourth most-watched in history and set records for digital engagement after the event.

The Super Bowl’s territory is no longer just the stadium where the game is played; it has expanded to encompass TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, Spotify, streaming platforms, media outlets, and advertising markets, reaching cultural communities that constantly reinterpret the event.

In this territory, artists represent communities, languages, memories, identities, and forms of belonging. Here, brands, cultural industries, technology platforms, and audiences negotiate collective meanings on a global scale.

The true magnitude of the phenomenon lies not in the millions of viewers who watch it each year, but in the event’s capacity to construct a shared space of cultural recognition among people who inhabit different territories, speak different languages, and live diverse realities. During the Super Bowl halftime show, every member of the audience participates in the same global symbolic experience.
